Thank you to Rev Your Bev for sponsoring this post!
Fun fact: my grandmother calls me “miss hydration” because I ALWAYS have my water bottle with me – or a water glass in hand!
I didn’t always drink a ton of water; I think it was college that I started getting into the habit of bringing a water bottle around campus with me, mostly because reusable water bottles looked cool and you could put fun stickers on them. 😉
I’ve since graduated from my old sticker-covered Nalgene water bottles to stainless steel (S’well is my jam – love how they keep my water cold even on super hot days), but the habit remains: my water bottle comes with me everywhere.
And now, Riese’s little water cup comes everywhere with us, too. 🙂
For me, it was all about establishing the habit, and having water easily available/the default choice. Obviously you can’t drink water if you don’t have any on hand, right?
Plus, the visual reminder that comes from having a water bottle with you at all times will help cue you to drink water – I won’t necessarily feel thirsty, but I’ll see my water bottle and decide a little water sounds good.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that water is good for you.
It’s necessary for most of the processes going on in our body every day, like digestion, nutrient absorption and transportation, circulation, maintenance of body temperature, creation of saliva, maintaining normal bowel and gastrointestinal function, and more.
Plus, water helps muscle cells to function properly and staying hydrated while exercising will help avoid muscle fatigue, which is clearly good news for those of us who enjoy fitness… or who, you know, just want energy to live our daily lives.
I know not everyone loves plain water as much as I do, though, which is why I’m excited to share some fun ideas for keeping your water exciting courtesy of Rev Your Bev!
Rev Your Bev is a statewide campaign, run by the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth, that raises awareness about the incredible health benefits you can see by making water your number 1 beverage of choice.
In addition to sharing water tips, recipes, activity ideas, and information on the benefits of drinking water all year long via their website, Facebook, and Instagram pages, they also host an annual day of action, Rev Your Bev Day!
This year, for the 7th annual Rev Your Bev Day on May 9th, over 700 schools and community organizations participated.
Apparently the kids had a blast learning about water and coming up with their very own infused water recipes using fresh ingredients.
I am excited to bring Riese to Rev Your Bev Day next year when she’s a little older – the videos and photos from the day looked so fun, and clearly it’s such a great message to spread to kids that water is not only good for you but can also be “fun”.
I absolutely love water infused with fresh fruit, veggies, and herbs – it’s such a great way to jazz up regular water.
If you have kids, hosting an infused water experiment day at home would be a great way to get them involved and excited about drinking more water!
Here are some of the favorite kid-created infused water combinations that came out of this year’s Rev Your Bev Day:
- Strawberry + watermelon + orange + mint
- Pineapple + grapefruit + strawberry
- Watermelon + mango + coconut
- Kiwi + mango + blackberry
- Strawberry + blackberry
- Strawberry + pomegranate + lime
- Strawberry + lemon
Apparently strawberry was the biggest overall hit, which doesn’t surprise me because it’s really delicious in water!
Riese, my mom, and I tested out some of the recipes ourselves yesterday morning for good measure. 😉
The strawberry, watermelon, orange, and mint infused water was really good, but in the end our favorite was the strawberry and lemon water!
Riese loved how tart the lemon made the water – she would make a face and then break into a big smile every time she drank it. 🙂
What are your favorite fruits, veggies, and herbs to infuse into water?
My all-time favorite combo is cucumber and mint – so refreshing! Although I love orange infused water, too… and of course the classic lemon + lime combo. You basically can’t go wrong. 🙂
