Pumpkin gets a lot of attention in the fall, but sweet potato is just as delicious and flavorful! Introducing this spiced sweet potato smoothie made with Greek yogurt and banana.
It’s the perfect way to start your fall morning (or give you a boost in the afternoon)!
This easy smoothie is packed with warming spices (just like pumpkin spice) and sweetened with banana.
Greek yogurt gives it a nice tangy flavor and makes it extra creamy. It also adds protein to keep you full longer, which is always a win in my book!
Banana Yogurt Smoothie with Sweet Potato
If you’re craving fall flavors but don’t feel like turning on your oven, you’re in luck: you can whip this smoothie up in practically no time!
The only prep involved is freezing sweet potato puree into cubes (which can obviously be done well in advance). After that, all you have to do is blend everything together!
I love how much this smoothie tastes like sweet potato pie. It’s perfect as the weather gets cooler. The sweet potato flavor really comes through here, but it could also work really well with pumpkin or butternut squash if you want to mix it up.
The spices in this smoothie are essentially the same as pumpkin spice. So if you love that flavor (who doesn’t?!), you’ll enjoy this, too. 🙂
Plus, it’s naturally sweetened with banana (although you can add maple syrup if you want to make it sweeter).
Are sweet potato smoothies healthy?
Absolutely! Sweet potato itself is super nutritious: it’s a good source of fiber, potassium, and Vitamin A.
On top of that, this smoothie in particular has banana (which has potassium and other vitamins), ground flaxseed (packed with fiber, protein, and antioxidants), and milk and Greek yogurt (hello protein!).
Recipe Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to throw together this sweet potato yogurt smoothie:
- canned sweet potato puree (Frozen into cubes. You can also roast or microwave a sweet potato and puree it yourself if you’ve got some lead time.)
- banana (Frozen is best to make sure the smoothie is thick and creamy!)
- plain Greek yogurt (This adds a tangy flavor and extra creaminess. I recommend using full-fat Greek yogurt for the best texture and flavor. Plus, it’ll keep you satisfied longer as Greek yogurt has more protein than regular yogurt!)
- milk (dairy or non-dairy – unsweetened almond milk is pictured below)
- ground flaxseed
- cinnamon
- ground ginger
- ground nutmeg

How to Make a Sweet Potato Smoothie
This is just like any other smoothie prep-wise, with one easy added step of freezing sweet potato cubes beforehand.
Step 1: Freeze Sweet Potato Cubes
Start by making frozen sweet potato cubes. Simply spoon canned (or homemade) sweet potato puree into an ice cube tray. Freeze until solid.
(Be sure to freeze your banana ahead of time, too! Tips for freezing banana are in this post: Healthy Recipes for Overripe Bananas.)
Step 2: Combine Ingredients & Blend Smoothie
Next, it’s as simple as putting everything into a blender and whirling until smooth!
You can tweak the amount of spices to your preference, or even use pre-mixed pumpkin pie spice instead (a 1/2 teaspoon should equal the amount of spices used in the recipe).
Then, it’s time to sit back and enjoy!
How to Add Protein to Smoothies
You can easily add protein to smoothies with ground flaxseed, chia seeds, Greek yogurt, nut butter, yogurt, cottage cheese, and/or milk.
Coincidentally, this smoothie features some of these already, so it’s packed with protein to keep you energized!
Recipe Variations
Spiced Oatmeal Cookie Smoothie: Add rolled oats to the smoothie (before blending) for a sweet potato oatmeal cookie-flavored smoothie.
Pumpkin Spice Smoothie: Replace the canned sweet potato puree with canned pumpkin puree (follow the same instructions for freezing it in the ice cube tray).
Sweet Potato Pie Smoothie: I didn’t use any maple syrup in this smoothie recipe, and I personally find it sweet enough (with some tanginess, thanks to the Greek yogurt). But, if you’re looking for a less-tangy, more pie-like flavor, you can add a little maple syrup to balance it – details are in the recipe card below!
